Introducing Individual Pool Play!

Due to popular demand, I’m pleased to announce a new offering at Dioji!
POOL PLAY!

Whether your dog needs a low impact exercise or simply wants the pool to themselves for some swim time, Pool Play is for them.

For $35, one of our dog associates will take your pal into the pool area all by themselves for a 20 minute swim session. It’s a fun whole body, low impact fitness session that will help improve your pals strength, endurance and flexibility.

I’ve seen it in action and it looks great! Sometimes the dog associates even get in the pool with the dog to help encourage them to swim.

Acupuncture for Companion Animals:
Ancient Treatments Still Prove Successful for Many Conditions

By Deanna Purvis, VMD, DACVECC, CVA – C.A.R.E. Hospital

2500 years ago, the Chinese developed a method of healing that has stood the test of time. This method of healing is acupuncture. Acupuncture involves the placing of thin needles into specific sites on the body in order to elicit a response in that body. The ancient Chinese belief was that energy moved through the body along lines or meridians. Deficiency or excesses of this energy, or blockages in the flow of energy caused illness. Acupuncture was performed to increase, decrease or help to unblock the flow of this energy. Today, we are discovering that stimulation of the acupuncture points discovered thousands of years ago, lead to changes in the body that can be measured. Many people are finding acupuncture to be valuable in treating their ailments and are interested if such treatments might give their canine companions similar relief.

Western Science Supports Acupuncture:
Placement of an acupuncture needle in an acupuncture point causes stimulation of a sensory nerve ending. This stimulation travels, via a sensory nerve, to the spinal cord where the message is relayed up the cord to the brain, and to other organs of the body such as liver and kidneys via the autonomic nervous system.

Conditions currently treated with acupuncture include:

  • Pain due to degenerative arthritis, surgery
  • Kidney Failure
  • Liver Disease
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Immune System Disorders
  • Seizures

If you are interested in exploring the option of acupuncture for your canine companion – I welcome your inquiries. Besides myself, there are others in the community that also provide acupuncture treatments, including some that are able to perform these treatments in your home. For a list of providers in Santa Barbara County – please speak with your primary care veterinarian to see who they recommend. There are a 4 or 5 local certified veterinary acupuncturists. To speak with Dr. Deanna Purvis, at CARE Hospital, please call 805 899-2273 (CARE). You are also welcome to visit our website at www.carehospital.org

Barkimonial

Hi, my name is Chai and I am a member of the Dioji Family. When I get to Dioji, I start pulling on my leash from the parking lot, excited to be apart of all the fun and to be with my friends with whom I play all day long. We get wet in the pool, roll around and do all sorts of fun things. When mom and dad see me in the evening and I'm all tired, they know I had a good time and it makes them happy. My human friends are really nice too. They know my name and welcome me in the morning with a huge smile and warmth. I get spoiled all day long, they play with me, feed me and make sure I don’t get into any trouble, and when I leave in the evening, I am smothered with love and kisses from them. Thank you Dioji for making my experience one of kind!

Who
Meghan Kestler-Tobias

Hometown
Santa Rosa, CA

Pets of your own
None at the moment, but I really want to adopt a Vizsla from Southern California Vizsla Rescue!

Something people may not know about you
I speak French and I've studied Mandarin, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Irish, Welsh, Latin, and Japanese.

Favorite activity with the dogs
I love playing with them in the pool. I often get in the water with them which I find encourages the dogs who may be a bit more timid about entering the pool, to try.

Funniest Dioji moment
There are quite a few really good "howlers" in the pack and I like to start howling a low howl near them so they will start howling. Soon more and more dogs are howling and they all crowd around the initial howlers. It's really fun and relaxing for them (and me) and I end up giggling when we finish!
